How To Paint a Room

This article will discuss the basic steps of how to paint a typical interior room. Whether a small bathroom or a large bonus room the steps are basically the same. For particular situations read the articles: "How To Paint a Stairway" and "How To Paint a Two-Story Room". The steps here are written in the order to most efficiently perform the work. Choose the Colors

Choose a color for each area to be painted, that is the woodwork, walls, ceiling, cabinets etc. Create a theme or express your own style with the color choices. See "How To Choose Colors" and "Six Step Color Choice".

Choose the Paint

Walls and ceilings are normally painted with acrylic (water-based) paint. Woodwork can be painted with either acrylic or oil-based paint. See "How To Choose Paint". All paints are available in a variety of sheens from flat to high gloss.

Organize Needed Tools

Gather the tools needed to complete the job. See "Tools". A basic painting toolbox will include:

• Roller covers, frames and handle extensions
• Bucket and screen or tray for the roller
• At least one medium size premium paintbrush
• Work pot and liners
• Drop cloths and lightweight plastic sheeting
• Old rags
• Caulking gun and caulk
• A narrow and wide flexible putty knife
• Hammer, pliers, and phillips and slotted screwdriver
• Utility knife
• Scraper

Besides paint and tools some other items may be needed such as caulk, wood putty, drywall tape, drywall mud, low-tack tape, spackling etc.
